I've been advised (and several providers promote) that buying traffic to a website will increase the search engine results for that website ie 10,000 targeted visitors for $whatever

The assumption being that if a ton of traffic is going to a site it must be popular and therefore Goggle decides it is worth promoting in it's results.

Before I go digging in my pocket to spend any of my hard earned cash, can anyone advise me:

1) Is it correct that brought traffic a websites ranking in search engine results?

2) If so, are there any pitfalls in doing it that I need to know about?
