If you use a service like XOOMblogs.com (free wordpress hosting) the answer is an affirmative YES.
Any site worth it's salt allows you to use subdomains (hotbabes.xoomblogs.com for example) or better yet, map your own domain to their servers.
I've been using XOOMblogs.com for a while now with my own domain names and I have two PR4 sites hosted there. And the best news is. It's free. Now, I do keep an offsite backup just in case they die, and I own my domain so I could easily move it to another WP hosting site over night.
But the simple answer is yes. You can certainly accomplish what you're trying to do with a free hosting service. IF... and that's important... IF you use the right service.
