I downloaded the free version today of the contest burner. When I tried to set up my first contest in Wordpress, it said I needed a license number. Is the FREE version still free?

The Free and Premium versions are in the same download, the premium features are disabled until you enter a license key in the settings.
You may be trying to use a Premium feature. The Free version is limited to one contest and that contest is the Default contest, you'll need to use it to setup your contest.
