Entrants carrying over points across contests

I'm thinking it might be interesting if users could accumulate the points gained contest after contest, and in the future I could display those publicily in a 'user profile' for my website. Of course, the contests would be based on Random Drawing, so that the same user doesn't win contest after contest for having highest point count.

I have questions towards the technical as well as marketing implications of doing this:
- Could I merge the previous contest database every time I begin a new one, as to go compounding the points and keep the users' points?

- Would new entrants feel put off and would results be too skewed in the long term? Of course the idea is to reward loyalty, which it would do.

Anyone willing to voice their opinion on such a practice is very, very welcome.
