What to expect when hiring a designer?

Hello everybody

I am a graduate student in cancer biology, and interested in web design topics as a hobby. Our graduate program is interested in setting up a new website for recruiting purposes etc, and has given our Graduate Student Association some money ($5k) to get one professionally made. I'm interested in helping out with these initial steps, selecting a company, writing some content etc.

Firstly, I'd be interested in hearing from any local (Austin TX, area) designers who might be interested in helping us out. What else might we need to know? If a company designs the site, how much maintenance will they do - just the setup? Should we expect a recurring fee to keep updated?

What exactly do you need in terms of Website Design?

By setup do you mean coding? That would be Web Development and cost extra. Recurring fees really do not exist in hiring a designer. You usually get what you pay for.
