He's not talking about on-site SEO here, he's talking about decreasing your bounce rate, the percentage of viewers who leave your site after only a few seconds.

The method used is split-testing, of which I've never divulged into. But you can also use ClickTale - I started using this just a month ago. You can see where viewers click on your site & how many do over a certain amount of time.

There's another site that does this (I used to use, forgot the name), but isn't as easy as ClickTale.

It could also have to do with the time it takes your site to load. This is something worth checking out in case it is a simple fix. Split testing is the best way to figure out problems like this, Steve is totally right on this point!!!

Yea, this was introduced with Google Caffeine (Jan 2010). The biggest page load problem is usually due to images - quantity and/or size. You should also avoid using tables, and place all scripts on another page.
