I find a really good way to do link exchange is offer services of some kind to the site your trying to get a link on. I usually offer a free video promoting their site with 5,000 views and find most are very keen and jump straight on this offer.

This also allows me to add another video to my portfolio, not to mention a link I was trying to get is usually upgraded to a 125x125 advertisment. So my advice is produce quality content for others and you will be rewarded in return.

Anyone got any other good tips to share?

Bear in mind to have quality link exchange in term of good page rank and also the niece of the back links. You will get banned by search engine if there is too much links from no related niche.

Another way to get back link is by giving away free custom website and blog template to public. Do not forget to put links back to your blog or website. It is really work for me.

Another good way to get inbound links is to set up a network of blogs who can all offer links to your site. You can also purchase or rent links from high PR sites.

You can also build your BL's by submitting to directories

Find a businesses website that has some relevance to yours. Contact the webmaster and offer to write an article. The article sould be at least 500 words long - preferably 800+. It should be good quality content.

Instead of linking "at the bottom", ensure that you are using some of the appropriate text in the article as "anchor text". This way, you will get a relevant link back rather than "Mark Clayson runs a website at www.blah_blah.com". You can also ask for your normal details to be added.

The 125x125 box is great - good advertising for direct visitor traffic. But it is better, for SEO to have a relevant text link. Better to have BOTH.

Oh ... don't forget to ensure that the link is not "no followed"

What do you think about writing an article that mentions another website and has a link to it, then emailing the webmaster and letting them know you have linked to them? Good strategy?

Yes thats a very good strategy. But before writing article you have to do a proper research on the prospective website to find out which particular type of article is lacking on the website. This will greatly increase you chance of your article acceptance.

You also want to keep in mind that they may not reciprocate that link. If you do your research and find a site with good traffic and is marketed to a niche closely related yours then you contact them with a proposal of sorts. Many other sites will want to check out your site to ensure that you are offering quality content etc before linking back to you. So, in your proposal send them a link as them to check out your site and explain what you are looking for or offering in the exchange.
