Finding links can be pretty tough if your site sells non-digital products. linking to sites that are compatible, but not in direct competition with your offerings can be sort of tricky.
Is it better to simply use links to your compatible affiliate accounts as your main source for outgoing links, or is it better to exchange links with sites that you hold nor affiliate interests in? |

I wouldn't worry too much about all the various theories about who you should or shouldn't link to. If there are valuable resources your users would find useful: link to them. If the resources aren't valuable or your users wouldn't be interested in them: don't link to them. Just follow those two guidelines & it'll all work out fine.
Outgoing links are part of how Google decides what your page and your site are about. So if you link out to good quality sites about the topic of your website, that's a good thing! |

I agree. Linking helps if it is related to your site .Besides, many search engines rank sites taking into consideration inbound links.Still you have to keep in mind the context of your site not just start to add links without any connection to yours.

I think one shouldn't be afraid of competition. It's out of the question, both in what regards rating and personal confidence.Even if the sites you link to are affiliate accounts or not, quality comes first. If they have good rating, you have good rating, everybody is happy.

I think exchanging links can help a lot. However I won't support exchanging links on a large level. The best way is to find sites which are uniquely related to our site and to get the permission from its administrator for link exchanges.

Yes of course one has to ask for the admin's permission ,it doesn't work otherwise. In addition your rating can be higher depending also on the quality of the links to your page.
So if the respective links are worth mentioning and have good traffic I don't see why one shouldn't use them. Of course you mustn't abuse this feature because it can be annoying for the visitor. |

The basic thing you have to do is to find out the related websites, and then contact the webmaster of each of them for link exchange.
In google just type Quote:
