Why do BackLinks Decrease?

Hi
I have a website which had a lot a back-links pointing to the main page and different pages of the website.
As per web grader, I had about 480 Backlinks about 2 months ago. After a month it had decreased to 250 and a couple of weeks ago to 140. Right now it has stabilized at 140 from last 2-3 weeks.
Most of the back-links come from the comments on blogs (70%).

Can you please explain me why do backlinks decrease. Also how should i avoid this thing. How can my blog comments (backlinks) remains stable and not decrease.

As Teddy mentioned, they most likely were removed or they've started using some sort of plugin that employs "nofollow".
