I used paypal a few years ago, and sold items through paypal. Paypal would take payments from my account and actually RETURN the money to the buyer, when I had overseas buyers claim they had never received items even when I showed proof of delivery! It got expensive and paypal did this several times so I stopped selling online with paypal, since it was too easy to get frauded. I hated paypal after that and considered them very unreliable. I was basically shipping semi expensive things free!

I agree, it takes some knowledge to manage this stuff so paypal taking a good care of this. From my experience, security is not complicated if you know what are you doing, dedicated server, firewall, ssl, encrypted cc numbers in the database without ccv codes - that is all you need.

emarketing: Did you switch to another merchant account or payment provider? Who did you switch to? How are they doing for you?

I've found that even traditional merchant accounts can be tough to deal with for online merchants like us. Unless you have an original card swipe and signature from the cardholder: they are pretty harsh with the merchant when it comes to chargebacks.

Hi Drexal,

I currently use First Data as my merchant account. They charge me a flat fee of $45 dollars a month and a per transaction charge. Am I being ripped off compared to PayPal?

I don't know that you're being "ripped off" but Paypal is free. Their business account has a small price and they DO take a percentage. I don't know if that percentage is higher or lower than what you're paying. You should just go to the paypal website and find out for yourself if it's cheaper or more expensive. They list out all their prices on their website. And you can see how they work etc. Also paypal is probably the most commonly used method for credit card processing and secure online payments, so people feel comfortable with that name and that helps as well. Just my opinion. I always feel safest paying with paypal than other online services.

I've been with Paypal for 4 years with both a personal and business acct. and the main difference is in the fee structure for transactions.

You need to do research and find out what your options are. Check out PayPal fees, and other options to process your accounts. There are so many routes available today. Just be sure to pick one that suits your company's needs.......and make sure the fees are reasonable too.

Hi,
In my experience paypal is the best, people have been using this system for many years and they trust it.Even if you don't have a Paypal account, you can use them to pay by Credit card anyway so that's cool.
