Default Needing advice about writing ebooks

Does anyone have any experience in writing ebooks? I am looking for a good software with low to no cost for compiling. How important is it for an ebooks ability to be downloaded into PDA's or a Hand held. Is Adobe PDF good enough?

If you're just selling your ebook to the general public a regular old .pdf will work just fine. If you are on a budget there are a lot of cheap or free programs to create PDFs with. I think open office's "writer" will even create them for you: Open Office

For freebee reports, I use Open Office. It is free and extremely simple to use. I hired a programmer to compile my commercial ebook. His people used Adobe and it is gorgeous.

I have created several e-books all have been for mass consumption and therefore pdf files. Actually if you have the newest version of word-you can get a PDF plugin for it. Then you don't even need the Adobe software installed on your computer. It's great because you can create your e-book in word and then you can convert it to PDF.
