How do I get 5k people to follow me on twitter?

I'd like to use twitter as a way to tell people more about my website, but without making the impression that I just want their money.

I guess what I'm asking is, what type of values do people look for on twitter?

You can get a lot of people following you just by following THEM, but if you want a certain type of public it would be a good idea to 1. offer/provide something helpful or beneficial...products, services, information and 2. search twitter for people interested in your products or services or your type of information that you provide and then follow THEM. As people get to know you, if your tweets seem valuable to them more people will follow you. Personally, I follow a lot of people and then unfollow them later if I get the idea that they're not real and just sending links for me to buy something from them with no human communication or interaction. I like to get to know my twitter followers.

Notice Drexel said to make sure "your tweets seem valuable", this is very important. One way I go about doing this is to offer tips and advice through my tweets and also ask questions to other followers to get conversations started. Once your followers see you are interacting with others and giving free tips and advice they are more likely to follow you and actually check out your links! Tweet it up!!!

the more you can contribute the better - it will snowball.

if you can add to 10 different people's conversation a day, that is 70 per week and over 300 per month.

those people start following you and eventually retweet you and so on...

but yes, it all starts from a place that you have a voice.

On social media sites, its ok to talk about your website or yourself always, because its the reason social networking sites are made for. it is to enhance or increase your visibility to other users in a positive way. Gain friends and let them know who you are, what you do and things that interest you. Interact with them and they will surely be your loyal subscribers.

As well as adding value and interacting by joining in other people's conversation, it also helps if you have a good 'bio'. Take a look at other people's 'bio' for ideas. If you have an interesting 'bio' whenever someone does a search, your name will appear based on the keywords in your 'bio', they will then happily follow you.
