In a recent live show, Bill answered a question about exact match domains. The question specifically was about how easy it might be to rank for an exact match domain name quickly, with 100,000 competiting sites. There were several good tips given in answer to this.
One key point was about the competition numbers in Google. Significantly more relevant to understanding your competition that the search number which appears on the right hand side of the page, which says something like 1 of 5 bizillion results, is the number you get if you put quotes around the search term first. This shows you how many people are searching that exact search phrase, rather than any combination of those words alone or with other words. Much more accurate.
Another important point discussed was “title tags”. These are the names of websites which show up in the bar at the top when you go to the page. To find out how many websites have your keyword phrase exactly in their title tags, enter allintitle:keyword into the google search field. That gives you your REAL competition numbers.
