Google is not a non-profit organization, by any means. But they do seem to have foregone a bit of financial concern for the purpose of human rights in China.
This week Google made a decision to end their search engine’s censorship in China. In December, Google was hacked bigtime. This was no harmless adware issue…this was the real deal. Upon investigation it was discovered that this hack came directly from the Chinese government! They were hacking the gmail accounts of human rights activists in China. Google had originally agreed with the Chinese government to censor search results at their request. But now that the government of China has used Google’s own services maliciously in an attempt to destroy the very human rights and freedoms provided by Google, all bets are off.
Google is willing to lose whatever potential future income it may have gotten from China in order to do what’s right. Kudos to you, Google. You’ve made us proud.
